Busted float and budget choices

Not sure if this belongs here but figured I'd throw it in General for now. Rebuilt the carb on my cousin's 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 800 after finding a cracked float and a diaphragm that looked like Swiss cheese. The rebuild kit did the trick but I'm wondering if a brand new carb is worth it. Prices are all over the map. Why is one $850 and the next $85?

Good job on the rebuild! Usually, there's a price difference between OEM and cheap aftermarket parts. OEM carbs are made to last, but they're expensive, like $850. The $85 ones might not be so reliable.

If your rebuild is working well, stick with it for now. How's it running? Would you prefer to fix it again later, or risk getting a cheap carb?

Good question, carb prices can vary wildly because some are OEM or high quality aftermarket, while others are cheap ones with questionable fit and performance. If the rebuild worked and the bike runs well, you're probably better off sticking with it unless issues come back. A quality new carb can be worth it long term, but definitely avoid the sketchy $85 ones unless you're just experimenting.

I appreciate both of you confirming the OEM vs cheap clone price mystery. The bike is running great after the rebuild so I'll follow your advice and stick with the original carb for now. If it acts up again are there any reliable aftermarket brands that offer a good middle ground?
